How much of a distraction from the real issues was 'Bigotgate'?
And why do you suppose the Tory supporting media (Sun, Telegraph, Mail, Express, Sky News) jumped on it with such glee?
Doesn't take a genius to work out. A more balanced (?) blog about this (admittedly in the Guardian, but it is based on real polling) suggests it hasn't done Labour TOO much harm, simply because they were doing badly anyway, and actually won't dent their hopes in too many seats they realistically expected to hold. In fact some polls taken since yesterday suggest the Tories will fail to take most of their Liberal Democrat target seats, also losing one to the Lib Dems, and only take a couple of their target Labour seats. The poll suggests Labour's London vote is holding up because of vigorous campaigning by Labour activists, and an invisible Tory party which failed to produce a manifesto for the capital.
I also said yesterday that I thought little real harm had been done by this in terms of seats, as the seats Labour will hold are their core seats with a huge vote share, and the loss of votes there would have to be huge, 1 or 2% is not going to do it.
For the record, that bigot in Rochdale said she would not be voting Tory either.
