What is the best format to save an illustrator/photoshop project for printing? ?
I would like to get a high quality print of an illustrator/photoshop project. I am taking it to a local print shop to get it done. I think I would prefer that thick, slightly textured/matte paper that almost looks like its mimicking a canvas (as opposed to glossy photo paper or something) and it probably won't be very big. Probably typical card sized or perhaps a little larger. What should I know before I do this? What format should I save it in? Can i just bring a flash drive to the print shop? What resolution/dpi should it be? Any special color profile? How much do you think it will cost to print one copy of something like that? Any information would help me! I'm totally new to printing and I would like this to look nice. Thanks!
Talk to your printer. They will have the best information for you, depending on what it is going to be printed on and the printing method. Many print shops are printing digitally, especially if you are only going to print one copy.
You can bring your image on a flash drive, that's fine.
I usually save as a PDF, using the setting of High Quality Print and unchecking the "preserve Photoshop [or Illustrator] editing ability". Also, if you are doing the work in Photoshop, you need to make sure you make a flattened copy of the image and then save as PDF from that (you always want to keep an unflattened copy so you can go back and do more work later if you want).
When working with raster/pixel images, such as you would in Photoshop, your resolution should generally be 300 dpi. This is true also of an image you may be bringing into Illustrator, and make sure the image is sized pretty close to what you want it to be before you place it in Illustrator. Although anything you draw in Illustrator is resolution independent (can be freely scaled up or down), raster (Photoshop) images you place in Illustrator still need to be at a decent resolution.
As for the actual color profile, again, check with the printer. Generally you do want to be working in CMYK color space, because that's what the print color space is, but the printer may have other details to give you.
I can't give you any guide on the cost of printing one item like that; paper costs are too variable, as are the actual printing costs. But you won't be printing a one-off in 4-color offset press; that's for large volumes only, because the setup is too expensive to do just one. So it would be a digital method.
